Counseling - The practitioners
Helen McEwen (M.B.A.C.P)
I have worked as a counsellor for 6 years in London and Bristol and in a number of different fields. I am presently working in private practice, though I also work for the NHS as a primary care counsellor, for the prison service and do some employment assistance' counselling for larger organisations.
I am in my early 50s, and an integratively trained counsellor, which means I use a variety of therapeutic models. Though have a particular interest in cognitive approaches to therapy, as a result of working in the field of addiction to alcohol and gambling, where I recognised that sustainable recovery is about making changes in self-perception and old behaviour patterns. My experience as an NHS counsellor, showed me that cognitive approaches are an effective and good way of bringing positive change and I use these in my work. However, I strongly believe in the individuality of people and also their problems, offering self-empowerment for tackling these in a variety of ways.
